I've been intrigued by earning real money by playing games for a long time, and wanted to share a few of the ones I know of, and maybe hear about some that I didn't previously know about. All of these are considered 'free to play' but as we know from Entropia, that really means something a little different. (Of course, no referral links here!)

Browser Games:
Market Glory-This is probably the most well-known 'economic/military strategy game' that uses a real-world value economy. In this game, you can open companies (or work for others) that produce all manner of products and materials that are used in game. You can also fight with other players, and invade other countries. They have been introducing many changes not well-received by the player base over the last year or so, which has caused their exchange rates of in-game currencies to tank. I've too much invested to walk away, so I do essentially the bare minimum to just collect my salary. It is still possible to make some sort of profit in this game, but much like M.A. and E.U., once you develop a winning strategy, they introduce some new change that makes your investments (time and/or money) basically worthless. Still fun(ish) to play, and doesn't take much time. Not sure what a brand new player could earn with/without investing, but my account is netting me roughly a real euro every third or fourth day.

Goal Tycoon-This is a sibling game to Market Glory, they share many of the same concepts, and many products produced by Market Glory players are sold to and used within Goal Tycoon. In this game, you assume the role of a football(soccer) club manager, complete with players, and a park. I'm not a sports fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I do like management style games. This game is really in its infancy, so expect some crazy (nearly game breaking) changes to continue to roll out if you join this one. This one is really deposit-pushy. Under the current meta-game, I don't see non-depositing players to be able to play for more than a few months, before running out of players, as they do age and retire. Not sure about netting real profits from this one, but there are some rather large bonuses in the upper leagues, and extra tournaments.

Anno1777-Another 'economic/military strategy game' with companies, fights, etc. Haven't been on this game in a while (I don't even currently have an active account) but last I saw, this game was dominated by one specific group. I was heavily invested in this game, with my own private land with a full arsenal of functional companies, but I managed to go more than 23 days without logging in, which apparently means my account was deleted, and all assets assimilated into the owner's pocket. I don't know how hard it is to profit from this game, but I know how easy it is to lose everything in ~3 weeks. :(

Corporation Master-This is a newer one, similar to other 'economy/military' types. I would say this game is in a playable alpha-state, but it seems to be profitable for many that invested from the start. There's new content being rolled out, but it's pretty quick and easy to just log in, work, and leave.

App-Style Games (hosted on websites):
Dungeons and Treasures-I only played this one briefly, but if you know of the old console-style raycasting dungeon crawlers, then you know this game. The concept is that each month, all players reset back to nothing, and the game provides 1 dungeon daily for free. You can spend money to buy more dungeons to explore, better gear to make it through them faster, things like that. The premise is that if you move quickly enough, or get lucky enough, you can sell your spoils to other players. If I remember, there's also some sort of reward paid each month (in game currency) depending on how far you got in that month. As far as profits go, I really have no idea, I only played this one for a couple days before forgetting about it.

Golden Towns-This one is made by the same people as Anno1777, in which you manage small city set in a gold-rush setting. You start with a handful of buildings that don't decay, and a couple people that never die to work them, and you build more buildings to expand your city. You can buy/sell/trade your resources to other players. The key word for this game is 'decay' which, if you are an Entropia player, you know that one well. Golden Towns is insanely decay heavy, so I'm not really sure what this game is like further in. I've never deposited to this one, but it's sorta fun as long as I have been able to manage before running out resources to maintain what I had built.

That's about it that I can think of as far as real cash games I have played. I've had limited success with some, and completely crashed and burned with others. I have heard of some others, but have never played them: (GoldenWars or GoldenAge or something like that? ProEconomica. Wurm Online.)

Do you have any to add?

Market Glory sounds interesting. I am a fan of browser based games and strategy. I have been playing Torn for over 2000 days now, wish it was a game you could make money in though. Thanks for sharing!

It is a pretty neat way to pass some time every day, but be forewarned that the game is possibly on the down-hill slope towards crashing. If you decide to get into the game, be sure to get in touch with me, I'll be happy to teach you the basics and answer any questions you may have.

Found another one, although it's not really a game per se.

It's more of a bitcoin faucet, with a silly RPG skin of sorts. When you start, you get some amount of satoshi, which can be used to increase your stats. You fight other people and take satoshi from them, and there's trainers you can fight too. They even have an affiliate system!

CoinBrawl.

Just read Anno1777 Terms of Use, seems a bit fishy.

8. Virtual currency

8.1 The user has the right to use virtual currencies of the service, “VIRTUAL EURO” and VIRTUAL GOLD, hereinafter referred to as virtual currencies. The only owner of the virtual currencies is the ADMINISTRATOR.

8.2 The currency VIRTUAL EURO is available for buying and distribution and is available for the user. By buying VIRTUAL EUROS or any other virtual goods, the user DOES NOT gain the ownership right for them, he only has a temporary right to use it. The owner of all virtual goods from the ANNO1777 service is the ADMINISTRATOR.
8.3 The user can ask to transform the currency VIRTUAL EURO available at a certain moment in time in his personal account in real money. The request is analyzed by the administrator who is the only one capable or approving or rejecting it.
8.4 The administrator reserves the right to reject any request coming from the user by which he wants to exchange the currency VIRTUAL EURO in money. The administrator is not obliged to provide a specific reason for this decision.
8.7 The administrator has the right to modify, withdraw, suspend or control the virtual currencies within the ANNO1777 service and the method of use anytime he wants to do so, and the user agreed that the administrator does not take any responsibility whatsoever for modifying, withdrawing, suspending or controlling the virtual currencies. In case a situation as above appears, the administrator is not obliged to notify the user or to provide explanations.

So... let me try to summarize that:

The "administrator" owns all of the virtual currency in the game. Game currency is can be bought from player to player, but the player receiving the money doesn't actually own it. The player can choose to withdrawal at any time, but it must be approved by the administrator, who can choose to deny the withdrawal for basically any reason, and doesn't have to give one...

Definitely smells like tuna... or salmon... or cod.

You're right, and most of the T.o.S. for games like that are going to be written that way, so they can cover their behinds for people who want to try and sue for losing their real money.

They are clever in writing their terms so that they have the right, at any time, for any reason, to say "Too bad, all the money you've paid into this game is mine, and there's no way for you to get it back."

I don't recommend depositing into games like these unless you really feel comfortable just tossing money in the trash, but if you stick with them long enough, you can get to the point even without ever depositing that you can withdraw some money. A few minutes a day playing a game for a few bucks is worth it to some people.

I'm certain that the T.o.S. for EU is written in nearly the same adage, but I haven't read it in almost 10 years.

I have a lot of respect for Entropia on this account.  I quit playing for like 8 years.  Just recently decided to come back and see what its like now.  My account still had all its items and ped after no logins for all that time.  It might be tough to make a profit (maybe some day Wink )  but at least MA does not loot your account if you stop playing for a bit.

Spark Profit is still alive and kicking with Android and iOS apps. Looks very interesting as I've dabbled in FOREX in the past.
